Title	English Cased Barrel Microscope and Original Fitted Rosewood Case
Description	Drum microscope of the 1820s, with rosewood box and accessories.
Notes	This microscope was donated in memory of Raymond C. Zastrow, MD (Class of 1955). Donated by his sons, Raymond J. Zastrow, MD (Class of 1983) and Joseph F. Zastrow, MD (Class of 1987). The drum microscope was invented by Benjamin Martin about 1730, and original versions were first made of cardboard and wood, sometimes with ornate leather covering. The basic design of these microscopes is very simple and includes a sliding body tube containing compound lenses and a base housing both the sample and a substage reflector to provide illumination. Focus is achieved with a rack attached to the knob on the side of the base housing. The microscope has several interchangeable objectives as well as lenses with Lieberkuhn reflectors for observing opaque samples.
